Why Charlotte Driver's Should Change Their Transmission Fluid

It’s easy for Charlotte car owners to forget about servicing their transmission because it doesn’t need it very often, but proper transmission service keeps your sedan running smoothly and helps you avoid costly repairs down the road.

The transmission undergoes a lot of stress. The grit you see in used fluid is actually bits of clutch material. This grit flowing through your transmission under pressure eats away at seals and gaskets which can lead to leaks.

The transmission operates at very high temperatures – about a hundred degrees higher than engine temperatures. Those high temperatures eventually cause the transmission fluid to start to break down and lose efficiency. At best, your sedan transmission won’t operate smoothly. At worse, it could lead to costly damage.

When your transmission’s running properly, it transfers more power from your sedan engine to the drive wheels, and improves fuel economy. That’s why vehicle manufacturers recommend you change transmission fluid at regular intervals. Your sedan owner’s manual has a schedule for transmission service and, of course, your Super Service Agents Carolina Tire & Auto service advisor can tell you what the manufacturer recommends.

Your Charlotte service center may be able to perform a transmission service while you wait and the cost is quite reasonable. Actually, it’s downright cheap when you think about how much a major transmission repair can cost!

PureContact with EcoPlus Technology (Grand Touring All-Season)

One of the best tire's to come along in recent history in Carolina Tire's opinion is by Continental tire, headquartered just minutes from us in Fort Mill, SC. Please welcome in the PureContact with EcoPlus.
The PureContact with EcoPlus Technology is Continental's Grand Touring All-Season tire developed for the drivers of luxury performance sedans, sporty coupes and crossover vehicles. PureContact tires are designed to balance long wear, a comfortable ride and low rolling resistance with wet grip and all-season traction, even in light snow.
Featuring a silica-enhanced, all-season tread compound, the PureContact with EcoPlus Technology incorporates Continental's Tg-F Polymers and +Silane additives to improve treadwear, fuel efficiency and traction on slippery roads. The compound is molded into a computer-optimized asymmetric tread design that reduces pattern noise while chamfered tread block edges enhance dry-road handling. Independent tread blocks are siped to provide additional biting edges while Continental’s Traction Grooves (vertical ridges in the circumferential grooves) promote three-dimensional snow-to-snow traction.
PureContact with EcoPlus Technology’s tread pattern features Tuned Performance Indicators — visible letters molded into the outboard shoulder to alert drivers of the tire's potential performance in various weather conditions. A visible "DWS" indicates the tire has sufficient tread depth for dry conditions, as well as wet roads and light snow. After the "S" has worn away, the remaining "DW" indicates the tire only has sufficient tread depth for dry and most wet road conditions. And after the "W" and "S" have both worn away, the remaining "D" indicates the tire has appropriate tread depth for dry conditions only.
The tire's internal structure features twin steel belts reinforced with spirally wound jointless polyamide to blend high-speed durability with ride uniformity. Continental's ComfortRide Technology includes a cushioning layer of rubber to absorb vibrations caused by road surface irregularities. PureContact tires also feature weight-optimized construction to reduce weight and rolling resistance.

These tires are available for purchase and for a limited time qualify for an instant $75.00 dollar rebate. ONLY at Carolina Tire & Auto:

Brake Service At Carolina Tire & Auto In Charlotte

Most Charlotte drivers know that braking means slowing or stopping a vehicle. The mechanical aspects of the brakes themselves are just one issue. There’s also the power brake system and brake fluid. And then there are the tires, which are critical to the effectiveness of the brakes.

Let’s step back. A car or truck rolls brand new off the showroom floor at a local Charlotte dealer. It has brand new brakes with brand new brake pads. The brake lines and the power assist are filled with fresh fluid and are completely clean inside. And the sedan tires are brand new, with full tread. Naturally, braking power is at its peak performance.

Now, as your drive from Charlotte to Charlotte and back, the miles start to add up. Most Charlotte car owners tend to focus on the brake pads. In the Charlotte automotive service community, the pads, and shoes on drum brakes, are called the friction material. That’s because they provide the friction used to stop the sedan. The pads are designed to be effective throughout their useful life – it’s not until they are worn so thin as to be out of spec that they lose stopping effectiveness.

The mechanical parts of the brakes have pistons and springs that get quite a workout while stopping the sedan. Over many miles, these wear and get gummed up. They start to lose effectiveness gradually and could even fail. That’s why a regular brake inspection is important. At Carolina Tire & Auto, we can test the operation of the brakes and see if any parts need cleaning or replacing.

That leads us to brake fluid service at Carolina Tire & Auto. Some of the critical additives in the fluid that lubricate and clean the sedan fluid system are depleted over time. That and moisture building up in the system deteriorate the performance of the brake fluid. Brake fluid replacement at Carolina Tire & Auto includes flushing the brake system to clean out deposits, water and dirt. Then the system is filled up with fresh fluid.

The tires are what connect the sedan to the road. The stopping force is ultimately dependent on the traction provided by the tires. The better they grip the road, the quicker you’ll stop as you drive around Charlotte.

For questions about brakes, brake pads, brake pads, Brembo braking systems, timing belts and water pumps, or tires, talk to Carolina Tire & Auto  manager Jim Seidel.

How to DePax your Honda Odyssey in Charlotte NC

2005-2009 Honda Odyssey Touring DePAX Kits from Carolina Tire & Auto

Now you can switch from Honda PAX wheels to conventional wheel and tires. Carolina Tire & Auto offers several different 16" and 17" Honda Alloy Wheels to fit your lifestyle. Please read the documentation we've provided and call us should you have any questions.

Based on Honda's "recommendations" any DePAX conversions, maintenance and safety are the sole responsibility of the vehicle owner. Carolina Tire is willing to supply and offer complete DePAX packages but on an "as is" basis only.

The Carolina Tire & Auto DePAX KitsWith the research you have done online you already know that you can switch from PAX wheels to a conventional wheel and tire. We offer several different 16" and 17" Honda Alloy Wheels to fit your lifestyle. You can reuse lug nuts*, tire pressure sensors^ and center caps~ from the PAX wheels or you may purchase new sets for a more "turn key" installation. Each kit priced below includes 4 wheels and a spare tire kit.
  • *Different style lug nuts are required for 2005-2006 models if you choose a 2007 or newer alloy wheel design.
  • ^It is highly recommended if you are reusing your sensors that your replace the valve stem assemblies. New tire pressure sensors come with valve assemblies when you order.
  • ~Kit5 includes center caps that will match the wheel design and color.
  • Only our spare kit includes a tire. You will be responsible for selecting an appropriate tire for your wheels from Carolina Tire & Auto Centers.

Selecting Appropriate Honda Tires: In order to buy safe tires for your Honda Odyssey Carolina Tire & Auto recommends to look for conventional tires that will most closely match the stock PAX specifications. You may match up any brand tire you wish but we have supplied our recommendations below.

SizeTireTreadwearRatingTraction/
Temperature
Load/

Load Rating
Per Tire
Tire/

Overall
Diameter
235-710R460AMichelin PAX500A/B104T198411828.0"
P235/65 R1616" Michelin Energy LX4500A/B103T192911827.9"
P235/65 R1616" Continental ProContact +740A/B103T192911828.0"
P235/60 R1717" Michelin Energy LX4500A/B102T187411828.0"
P235/60 R1717" Continental ProContact +740A/B102H187413028.1"

Proper Load Rating: To figure the tire load rating multiply the rating of the tire by 4. For example a 17" Michelin Energy LX4 has a load rating of 1874 pounds. This number multiplied by 4 gives you a total of 7496 pounds. A 2007 Touring model with PAX tires comes in at a curb weight of 4678 pounds. This will leave you with 2818 pounds of vehicle load which includes passengers, cargo and tongue weight if you are pulling a trailer. The max load limit for the 2007 Touring is 1208 pounds according to the owner's manual. That being said even at full vehicle load you would still have 1610 pounds leftover.

Touring Model Informational Display: If air pressure in a tire drops significantly on a vehicle designed to use a PAX system, a message appears on the multi-information display telling the driver it is OK to keep driving on the PAX wheel. This is because a PAX tire can be driven on even when it is significantly under inflated or flat. This message will appear even if the vehicle is subsequently outfitted with conventional wheels and tires. Therefore if this message appears after DePAXing you should treat and address the issue as you would a conventional wheel and tire setup. You will no longer be able to drive safely on severely under inflated or flat conventional tires.
Additional information about the PAX system can be found at http://www.michelinman.com/pax.

The most popular Honda wheel option is the slotted wheel: Brand new regular tires, brand new Honda wheels, reusing your old TPMS sensors and reusing your old center caps = $1,500.00 to $1,800.00 depending on your size tire and wheel. These will be 70,000 mile treadwear warranty tires.

"American Honda strongly recommends that you replace the original PAX tires only with new PAX tires of the same size and speed rating. Using any non-PAX tire/wheel assemblies on a vehicle originally designed for PAX tires poses significant safety concerns and is not recommended or approved by American Honda." Every car owner who has taken their car in for an oil change has been told that their engine air filter’s dirty. Here’s what goes into the determination of when to change the filter: First, your sedan owner’s manual will have a recommendation of when to change the filter. Second, a visual inspection by your Charlotte technician may determine that your filter it is visibly dirty and needs to be changed.
So between your sedan owner’s manual and your Charlotte technician’s inspection there’s really no guesswork involved.

Now, most air filters purchased in Charlotte don’t cost a lot to replace. It’s just that NC people hate getting caught with an unexpected expense. On the plus side, though, changing a dirty air filter at Carolina Tire & Auto can often save enough on gas to pay for itself before your next oil change.

Think about a dirty furnace filter in your Charlotte home. When it’s all clogged up, enough clean air can’t get through. In your sedan, that means that your engine can’t get as much air as it needs to burn the fuel efficiently. So it makes do with less air and has to use more gas to move your vehicle around Pineville roads.
Your sedan actually needs about 12,000 gallons of air for every gallon of gas it burns. Engine air filters don’t cost much in Pineville at Carolina Tire & Auto. When it’s time to change yours, just get it done. You’ll save money, have better performance and protect your engine.

Even in Record Heat, Tire Care Should Be No Sweat!

55% of Vehicles Have At Least One Under Inflated Tire

CHARLOTTE, Aug. 3, 2011 -- Record-setting heat across the U.S. can add to the risk of tire failure for overloaded vehicles with under inflated tires driving at highway speeds.

"Heat is the enemy of a tire," said Jim Seidel, president of Carolina Tire & Auto. "Under inflated tires generate excess heat that, over time, can cause damage and lead to a failure."

A 2010 RMA survey found more than half of all vehicles have at least one under inflated tire. One in seven vehicles had a tire under inflated by 8 pounds per square inch (psi).

"Tires are built to last tens of thousands of miles but they can't take unlimited abuse," Seidel said. "The air in your tires is carrying you, your family, your cargo and your car's weight. When under inflated, a tire is over-stressed because it cannot support that load. Neglect your tire pressure for too long, particularly during the hottest time of the year and you're inviting potential trouble."

Carolina Tire & Auto operates a local education program from the RMA -- Be Tire Smart – Play Your PART -- to raise awareness about the importance of tire maintenance. PART is an acronym that stands for Pressure, Alignment, Rotation and Tread – the four basic elements of tire care.

Pressure – Check tire pressure every month and before long trips. Check tires when cold -- before you drive. Use the correct inflation pressure that is found on a label on the driver's door or check the owner's manual.

Alignment – Misaligned wheels can cause premature tire wear. Have alignment checked periodically or if you notice your vehicle "pulling" to the left or right. Hitting a pothole or curb could affect your wheel alignment.

Rotation – Rotate tires every 5,000-8,000 miles or check your owner's manual for a specific interval. Rotation helps tires wear evenly.

Tread – Inspect tread for damage every month when checking tire pressure. To ensure sufficient tread depth, do the penny test. Take a penny, insert upside down into tread groove. If you see all of Lincoln's head, it's time for new tires.

"Checking tires is simple and takes just five minutes," Seidel said. "If you don't do it yourself, Carolina Tire & Auto will do it for you free of charge. There's no reason to skimp on tire care."

Failure to Check Tires Causes Wrecks in Hot Weather

Six out of 10 motorists wash their cars at least once per month, but only one in seven properly checks their tire pressure, a recent survey by the Carolina Tire & Auto reports.

And as the summer days turn into Charlotte scorchers, that lack of tire care can be deadly, especially with large trucks, cars and van or hauling summer luggage, says Jim Seidel, president of Carolina Tire & Auto of Pineville, NC.

“Excessive heat is a key trigger for tire failures,” says Seidel, whose company replaces thousands of tires per year.

Tires are engineered to support the high amount of friction that occurs when trucks are traveling at high speeds. But couple that with very high outdoor temperatures, and you’ve got a serious safety hazard on your hands.”

That’s because hot weather can cause tires to heat up beyond their design specifications, Seidel explains. Also, trucks carrying loads exceeding their approved weight limit or whose tires are underinflated can lead to fatal blowouts, the tire expert says.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 3,400 people were killed in tire-related crashes in the United States between 2005 and 2009. An additional 116,000 were injured in wrecks caused by tire problems.

While some blowouts are nobody’s fault, others occur due to negligence on the part of driver. People sometimes just pay less attention to tire maintenance.

“The the heat, coupled with the air pressure and load that you may be carrying makes it even more important that Charlotte drivers do simple things like check tire pressure,” Seidel says. Or come on in to Carolina Tire & Auto and have them professionally inspected for free.
